NRA Junior Sectional Championships

February 4th & 5th, 2012

Fly Tying ClassFor the first time in 15+ years Multi-Lakes entered a team of Jr. shooters in the NRA Junior 4-Position Sectional Championships. The match was held at the Detroit Sportsmens Congress on February 4th & 5th. Our crop of young shooters did themselves proud considering 4 of the 6 shooters had never fired a round in competition before. We had to enter a mixed team comprised of Junior, Intermediate Junior, & Sub-Junior shooters as we are not quite ready to field a team comprised of only one division. Our team shot a combined 1229/1600. Anthony Shaw lead the way with a 345 (in the process taking first overall in the sub-junior division), Melanie West – 331, Michael O’Korn – 330, and Emma Michniewciz – 223. We had two other sub-juniors that competed on an individual basis, James Michniewicz – 294, & Matthew West – 209. All in all a great first competition experience for our team.

Michael O’Korn and Anthony Shaw also entered the NRA Junior 3-Position Sectional Championships later in the afternoon firing at the much tougher USA50 International target. Was a grueling marathon day for these two young men, Michael improved over his first attempt at the USA50 targets back in December by shooting a 375. Anthony Shaw upset the defending sub-junior champion taking first place with a score of 420/600.
Things are looking up for our young shooters and interest in competing against other clubs is taking off. It is important to remember that there are spots on the Jr. Olympic team, US Shooting team and college scholarships available to these youngsters if they practice hard. We are even floating the idea of some friendly monthly matches with the Detroit Sportsmans Congress to help get more competition experience for our youngsters.
